WTA Wednesday!

New Feature!

Some news from the women's game now, I thought I would start the WTA Wednesdays with a look at the new world number 1 and Australian Open 2012!

Victoria Azarenka

She beat Maria Sharapova and went from being the world number 3 to the world number 1, truly a fantastic achievement. The women's game looks set to become more competitive again, we can never write of the Williams sisters but it looks like a new era is beginning with new champions, and old, competing fiercely!

If you want to catch up with what Azarenka is up to I suggest you follow her on twitter!

Australian Open Round 4 Round-Up (Plus their path to the quarters!)

And this tournament just got serious, the quarter-finals match up's are:

Djokovic
Ferrer

Murray
Nishikori

Del Potro
Federer

Berdych
Nadal

To be honest this line up is not much of a suprise apart from the appearence of Nishikori in the place of Tsonga, it is great that a Japanese player has made it this far at a Grand Slam and even if he loses to Murray it will still have been a great achievment and a good start to the year.

So the question people are finally beggining to whisper is who will win the championship?

There has been a few on court melt downs this year, Marcos Baghdatis managed to break not one, two or three but FOUR RACKETS!This action has cost him a $1,250 fine.

For those interested the Australian Open Website has a list of some of the most sensational racket smashes, which is your favourite? Top 10 Racket Smashers

Another moment of anger played out during this years Australian Open cost that player $8,000 in fines for unsportsmanlike conduct, David Nalbandian is the player I am speaking off. In a five-set match against Isner in his second round match, Isner was facing a break point when chair umpire Kader Nouni overruled a fault call on Isner’s first serve and would not let Nalbandian challenge the call, saying that Nalbandian had not been quick enough. Nalbandian protested the ruling to Nouni and supervisor Andreas Egli, but the call was not overturned.

Nalbandian said afterwards  “I mean, it’s ridiculous playing this kind of tournament with this kind of umpires. What is this? What did the A.T.P. do for this? I didn’t understand in that situation, eight-all break point. I mean, [how] can you be that stupid to do that in that moment?”

Federer was asked for his opinion and he said “You wish that you talk about how great they were serving and returning and playing instead of talking about this one stupid call. Unfortunately it might have changed the outcome of the match potentially. We all knew that this is exactly the type of point that needs to be challenged, either from John or from David or from the umpire. We need to see the call. It can’t be that there is no call. So it was just so unfortunate. I felt bad for David, but it was still a great match. I guess the players and the umpires need to get it right in terms of helping each other.”

The International Tennis Federation said that Nalbandian’s fine was for throwing water on an Australian Open staff member after the match. This fine is the largest of the tournament to date.

Isner was fined $800 for racket abuse.

A total of 19 fines have been issued so far, all to male players, oh dear!

Now an interesting article from the Australian Open website, the top 10 Australian Open merchandise,

By Suzi Petkovski
Always a buzz to see the vivid new line of AO merchandise, like a burst of exotic butterflies. Give the debit card a workout with these top 10 merch items.

1. The AO towel. Even the champions have been known to, ahem, liberate these for friends. Full-size player towel, men’s and women’s designs ($55) or the smaller gym towel ($35), for the tennis bag.

2. Love the ‘Love’ T-shirt for girls ($30). Tennis wear, beach wear, everywhere-wear.

3. Collectible coins to mark the 100th men’s Australian championship. The $1 coins are $15; the $5 coin is $25 and the gold-plated $2 coin (keep it away from your coffee money) is $95.

4. Australian Open program ($20). For fans of Super Novak, worth the cover price just for the great locker-room shot of Novak celebrating with his team last year. For this 100th championship, the program is packed with player profiles of the top 100 men and women. (Disclosure: this writer’s byline is on the men’s profiles.)

5. Cheap and cheerful alternative to the special-issue coins: men’s and women’s trophy pins for $5.

6. Paprika-red women’s event T-shirt, with electric-blue logo ($40). Worthy of Carrie Bradshaw. Manolos optional.

7. Umbrella ($20). This is Melbourne, after all. Four seasons in one day. And it’s bright blue, so less chance of leaving it on the tram.

8. Well, at least look like a champion. Pour yourself into Queen Serena’s royal-blue Nike dress ($120).

9. Big-ticket item: Roger Federer’s new Wilson weapon. Yours for $290.

10. Tennis is your bag, so pack it all into an AO tote for $3, or $5 for just the bag.
